Hugo and Josephine

Maria Gripe

All the boys and girls in Josephine's first-grade class bullied and teased her before she met Hugo, a wild, carefree boy who goes to school only when he can fit it into his busy schedule of wood carving and exploring nature. He is more than a match for the school bullies, let alone the teacher. The friendship of the two, from the opening of school up to a momentous Christmas celebration, is often hilarious and always very touching.

Maria Gripe was born in 1923 in Sweden. She 'is one of Sweden's most distinguished writers for children.' She has won numerous awards, including the Nils Holgersson Prize in 1963 for Hugo and Josephine and the Hans Christian Anderson Medal in 1974. Also in this series are Josephine and Hugo. Her husband Harald Gripe, a painter, has illustrated a number of her books, including this edition of Hugo and Josephine. There is not much information on the Internet in English about Maria Gripe (although her books seem to be readily available), but if you happen to read Swedish, this web site seems to have quite a bit of information: Maria Gripe. Harald Gripe is also the founder of the Swedish Toy Theatre Musem.

Other books by Maria Gripe that have been translated into English include: Agnes Cecelia, Elvis Karlsson, Elvis and His Friends, Elvis and His Secret, The Glass Blower's Children, The Green Coat, In the Time of Bells, Julia's House, The Land Beyond: A Tale Twice Told, The Night Daddy, Pappa Pellerin's Daughter, and Shadow on the Stone Bench. These can be found either new or used at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Bibliofind.
